Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417) โ€” easiest first step

UK nationals aged 18โ€“35 can apply for a Working Holiday Visa allowing up to 12 months in Australia with unlimited work rights. Do qualifying regional work (agricultural, construction, tourism in regional areas) and you can extend to a second year, and then a third. Many UK expats use the WHV as a low-commitment way to test Australia before committing to a longer-term visa. Cannot be used as a permanent solution โ€” you will need a skilled visa for long-term residency.

Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)

Points-based visa with no employer or state sponsorship required. Minimum 65 points. Awards are made for: age (peak points 25โ€“32), English proficiency, overseas work experience, Australian work experience, qualifications, partner skills, regional study and other factors. Points requirements at invitation change with demand โ€” 65 is the minimum but the actual invitation threshold fluctuates. Check immi.homeaffairs.gov.au for current invitation trends.

Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)

As above but with state or territory nomination, which adds 5 points. Each state and territory has specific occupation lists and requirements for nomination โ€” check the relevant state immigration website for current priorities. Popular for occupations in healthcare, engineering, education and trades where state shortage lists are active.

Employer Sponsored (Subclass 482 โ€” TSS Visa)

Your Australian employer sponsors you for a Temporary Skills Shortage visa (up to 4 years). The occupation must be on the relevant skills list. A pathway to permanent residency via the subclass 186 (Employer Nomination Scheme) after 2โ€“3 years. Most practical route for those who already have a job offer in Australia.

Australian tax as a new resident

Once tax resident, Australian income tax applies on worldwide income. Progressive rates 0โ€“45%. Medicare levy 2%. 50% CGT discount on assets held 12+ months. Superannuation at 11.5% from employer. See the Australia inbound tax guide โ†’
