Source: Emirates NBD (emiratesnbd.com) ยท ADCB (adcb.com) ยท First Abu Dhabi Bank (bankfab.com)

The three main options for expat banking in UAE

Emirates NBD โ€” most widely used by expats in Dubai. Good app and English service throughout. Salary transfer account requires employer relationship. ADCB โ€” strong in Abu Dhabi. Good digital banking. First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB) โ€” largest bank by assets in the UAE. Both salary transfer and individual accounts available.

Salary transfer requirement

Most UAE current accounts require your salary to be transferred through the account (Wage Protection System compliance). If you are employed in the UAE, your employer typically handles this. If self-employed or on a freelance/investor visa, ask specifically about accounts that do not require mandatory salary transfer.

Minimum balance accounts

Many UAE bank accounts have minimum balance requirements (typically AED 3,000โ€“25,000 depending on the account type). Falling below the minimum triggers monthly maintenance fees. Check the specific account terms before opening.

Documents required

Passport ยท UAE residence visa ยท Emirates ID (or application in progress) ยท Salary certificate or proof of income ยท Proof of address (utility bill or tenancy agreement). Some banks accept UAE visit visas for basic savings accounts but current accounts generally require residency.

Transfers from the UK

Use Wise or OFX for GBP to AED transfers. Both support direct deposit to UAE bank accounts. See the UK to UAE transfers guide โ†’
