Best providers for UK to Europe transfers

🥇 Wise — best for most transfers

Wise is the best choice for GBP to EUR for most amounts. Mid-market rate with a small fee typically 0.35–0.45%. Transfers arrive in 1–2 business days via SWIFT for GBP→EUR. Wise also holds EUR in your account — useful if you want to convert at a good rate and hold until needed.

🥈 OFX — best for larger amounts

OFX has no transfer fee and competitive margins on GBP→EUR, particularly for amounts above £5,000. Good for regular larger transfers — salary, pension, rent. 24/7 phone dealing useful for timing larger transfers.

Alternative providers

Revolut is fee-free within plan limits on weekdays. Weekend markup applies. Useful for smaller transfers within plan limits but check the limit applies to your plan.

Banking in Europe

IBAN is mandatory for EU bank transfers. You will need the recipient's full IBAN. SEPA Credit Transfers (SCT) process same-day or next-day within the SEPA zone at no cost when transferring EUR between EU accounts. GBP transfers from the UK use SWIFT routing.

For UK expats settling in Portugal or Spain, opening a local bank account is essential for local Direct Debits, rent and local utility bills. N26 and Bunq offer EU online banking open to UK citizens. Local banks (Caixa Geral in Portugal, BBVA or Santander in Spain) are better for local transactions.
