The weekend markup — what it means in practice

⚠️ Avoid converting currency on weekends with Revolut

Currency markets close on weekends, so Revolut applies a markup of 0.5–1.5% on weekend currency conversions to protect against opening rate risk on Monday. On a £5,000 transfer, that's £25–75 of extra cost. Convert on weekdays to avoid this. Wise and OFX do not apply a weekend markup.

How to use Revolut well as an expat

Revolut works best as a daily spending account — using the card for everyday purchases in local currency, tracking spending across multiple countries, and small peer-to-peer transfers. For large or regular bank-to-bank transfers (salary, pension, rent), Wise or OFX are more cost-effective. Many expats use both: Revolut for daily spending, Wise for transfers.
