HSBC Hong Kong โ€” most used by expats

HSBC has the widest expat recognition and the most international-friendly service in Hong Kong. If you also have a UK HSBC account, there may be some account relationship benefits โ€” check HSBC Premier terms. HSBC One (formerly HSBC Everyday Global) is the main retail account. Excellent app.

Hang Seng Bank โ€” local market leader

Hang Seng is a subsidiary of HSBC Group but operates independently. Strong local network, well-regarded for everyday banking. Hang Seng Enjoy Card offers competitive rewards. The go-to recommendation for expats wanting a truly local bank with strong digital banking.

Standard Chartered HK โ€” strong for international expats

Standard Chartered has particular strength for expats who move between international markets. Good for those with financial connections in Singapore, UAE or India. Relationship banking available.

FPS โ€” Faster Payment System

Hong Kong's FPS allows instant HKD and CNY transfers between accounts, 24/7, using phone number, email or FPS ID. Free. Register through your bank's app once your account is open. Essential for local payments and receiving salary.

Octopus Card

The Octopus card is Hong Kong's contactless payment system โ€” used on MTR, buses, taxis, convenience stores and most shops. Not tied to a bank account. Get one at any MTR station on arrival โ€” it is essential for daily life. Add credit directly or link to bank account for auto top-up.
