Employment Visa โ€” the standard route

The most common path for expats. Your employer in Hong Kong sponsors your visa application. Processing time approximately 4โ€“6 weeks. The visa is tied to your specific employer โ€” if you change jobs, you must apply for a new visa through the new employer. Generally easier to obtain than most countries given Hong Kong's active recruitment of overseas talent.

Top Talent Pass Scheme (TTPS)

Introduced in late 2022 to attract global talent. Category A: annual income of HKD 2,500,000+ in the 12 months before application. Category B: graduates of top 100 universities globally (QS or equivalent) in the past 5 years with 3+ years' work experience. Category C: graduates of top 100 universities in the past 5 years without work experience requirement (quota applies). TTPS provides a 2-year stay without needing a job offer.

Quality Migrant Admission Scheme (QMAS)

Points-based admission scheme for skilled professionals. No job offer required. Points awarded for age, academic qualifications, work experience, language ability and family background. Annual quota โ€” acceptance is not guaranteed. Processing time is longer than other routes. Check the HKSAR Immigration website for current quota status.

Personalised Employment Pass (PEP)

Available to current EP holders earning HKD 22,500+/month or overseas professionals earning HKD 270,000+/year. Valid 3 years, not renewable. Not tied to a specific employer โ€” allows up to 6 months between jobs. Useful for senior professionals who want flexibility. Once the 3-year period ends, you must obtain an Employment Visa through a new employer.

Hong Kong tax for visa holders

Salaries tax capped at 15%. 0% capital gains tax. Territorial system โ€” only Hong Kong-source income taxed. See the Hong Kong tax guide โ†’
