Which banks work for expats

The three most expat-friendly banks in Thailand are Kasikorn Bank (KBank), Bangkok Bank and SCB (Siam Commercial Bank). KBank has the most accessible process in Bangkok and major cities. Bangkok Bank has historically been the most expat-experienced. All three have English-language app and online banking interfaces.

Documents required (varies by bank and branch)

Passport ยท Non-Immigrant visa (tourist visa usually insufficient โ€” most banks require Non-B, Non-O, or LTR visa) ยท Proof of address in Thailand (rental contract or utility bill) ยท Work permit or letter of employment (for Non-B applicants) ยท Some branches accept less โ€” requirements vary by branch and are subject to change.

โš ๏ธ Requirements change by branch

Bank branch requirements in Thailand are not consistent nationally. One branch may accept your Non-O visa; another may not. Call ahead or visit a branch in your area known for handling expat applications. Larger branches in Bangkok (Sukhumvit, Silom, Sathorn) are generally most experienced.

LTR Visa holders

LTR Visa holders generally have a more straightforward banking process. The BOI issues a LTR certificate that is accepted by all major Thai banks. Keep your LTR certificate accessible when opening any financial account.

PromptPay โ€” Thailand's instant payment system

PromptPay allows instant THB transfers between accounts using a phone number or national ID. As an expat, you can register your PromptPay with your passport number. Essential for receiving payments domestically and for most Thai e-commerce platforms. Free to use.

Transfers from the UK

Use Wise or OFX to send GBP to your Thai bank account. Wise supports direct deposit to all major Thai banks. See the UK to Thailand transfers guide โ†’
