Banking in Spain for Expats 2026 — BBVA, Santander and CaixaBank

NIE number first, then bank account. BBVA, Santander and CaixaBank compared. Non-resident account options while waiting for residency.

Source: BBVA (bbva.es) · Santander (santander.com/es) · CaixaBank (caixabank.es)

NIE first — mandatory

Like Portugal's NIF, Spain requires a NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero — Foreigner Identification Number) before you can open a bank account. Apply at the local Extranjería office (foreigners registration office) or through the Spanish consulate in the UK before departure. EU citizens: easier process. Non-EU citizens: more documentation required. NIE applications can take weeks — apply early.

Main banks for expats

BBVA — strong digital banking, one of the best Spanish banking apps, English-language online service available. Santander — good for those who also have a UK Santander account, potential for relationship recognition. CaixaBank — largest by branch count, useful for those in smaller cities and towns.

Non-resident accounts

Non-resident accounts (cuenta de no residente) are available at most Spanish banks for those who do not yet have Spanish residency. These allow basic transactions but typically exclude mortgages and some products. Once residency is established, upgrade to a resident account.

Transfers from the UK

Wise and OFX for GBP to EUR. SEPA transfers within the EU once you have a Spanish account. See the UK to Europe transfers guide →
