The NLV income requirement is linked to the IPREM indicator and changes annually. RD 1155/2024 is in force from May 2025. Always confirm the current figure with the Spanish Consulate before applying.
The NLV prohibits all work including remote work for non-Spanish clients. If you work remotely for any employer or client, you need the Digital Nomad Visa (Visado para Nómadas Digitales), which requires ~€2,646/month income (200% of SMI). The Digital Nomad Visa also qualifies for the Beckham Law 24% flat tax rate for 6 years. See the Spain tax guide →
The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is your Spanish foreigner identification number. It is required for: opening a Spanish bank account, buying property, signing a rental contract, utility contracts, enrolling children in school, healthcare registration and most official transactions. You can apply at the Spanish Consulate in the UK before departure or at the local Extranjería (foreigners) office on arrival. Apply early — appointments fill up.
1. Gather and apostille all UK documents. 2. Book appointment at Spanish Consulate (London, Edinburgh or Manchester) — allow 3–5 months. 3. Submit NLV application with full document pack. 4. On approval, enter Spain within 90 days. 5. Apply for TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero — foreigner ID card) at local Extranjería office within 90 days of arrival. The TIE is your primary ID in Spain.
